Palais Royal – Musée du Louvre is a station on lines 1 and 7 of the Paris Métro.
It is one of the eight original stations opened as part of the first section of line 1 between Porte de Vincennes and Porte Maillot on 19 July 1900, under the name Palais Royal. The line 7 platforms were opened on 1 July 1916 with the extension of the line from Opéra. It was the southern terminus of the line until it was extended to Pont Marie on 16 April 1926. The station was given its current name in 1989, soon after the opening of the new entrance to the Louvre Museum. It is named after the nearby Palais Royal and the Louvre.
The entrance on Place Colette was redesigned by Jean-Michel Othoniel, as the "Kiosque des noctambules" (Kiosk of the night-walkers), and completed in October 2000 for the centenary of the Métro. Two cupolas of the "Kiosque des noctambules" (one representing the day, the other the night) are made of colored glass beads that are threaded to structure of aluminum. They make an unexpected and original work in the very traditional environment of the Place Colette.

From Paris to London ... this year's Christmas tree at Claridges.
CLARIDGE'S CHRISTMAS TREE
Claridge's is delighted to announce that this year the annual Christmas tree will be designed by long time guests and friends, designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.
Unveiling on 26th November, the tree will depict iconic elements from a traditional Christmas tree reinterpreted with Sicilian elements that draw on the Italian heritage of the designers: hand-crafted Sicilian puppets known as 'pupi', hand-painted Italian festive glass baubles and a bespoke multi-coloured 'luminarie' framework created in southern Italy.
Commenting on their creation Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana said “When we think of London, we always think of Claridge's and of its typically English atmosphere that fascinates us and makes us fall in love with the city every time as if it were the first. Our Christmas tree isn't only a celebration of Christmas as we celebrate it in Italy, but it is at the same time a tribute to the artisanal Italian tradition, the same that we love to export worldwide with everything we do."

The Metro artwork is beautiful and would certainly make finding the entrance on the street easy!
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit wishy-washy on the tree, while I do find it lovely, there seems to be a disconnect between the puppets around the base and the rest of the tree. (for me, at least) I actually like the puppet part the best.
Everything is very cheerful, love the colors and sparkle!
ReplyDeleteThose glass beads are AWESOME!!! The tree is a bit busy for me, but the staircase, black and white floor, glass doors, wood detailing and bannisters are heavenly!
ReplyDeleteThose are so neat! Very cheerful when the weather is not.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous pics. I was in Paris last year for my birthdaay. I miss it so much
ReplyDeleteLove the glass balls on the Metro. I've travelled on these lines and they knock the spots off anything we have over here for style, cleanliness and safety. Beautiful city.
