I blame Dr Dre

If you have a spare £150 to £270 and don't mind looking a little bit silly I strongly suggest you buy some Beats by Dr. Dre.

Beats By Dr. Dre is a brand of headphones and loudspeakers marketed by hip-hop/rap musician Dr. Dre and Interscope-Geffen-A&M Records chairman Jimmy Iovine under Beats Electronics LLC.[1] There are six versions of the headphones and six versions of the earphones, which are manufactured and distributed under exclusive license by Monster Cable Products. As part of marketing strategy, the headphones often appear in music videos, movies, advertisements and other media.

There are two branches of the Beats headphone family; In-ear headphones such as iBeats, Tour, Heartbeats By Lady Gaga, DiddyBeats by P. Diddy, JustBeats by Justin Bieber, & PowerBeats by LeBron James and on-ear/over-ear headphones such as Studio, Solo/Solo HD/Solo HD (RED), Wireless, Mixr, Executive, and Pro.
Headphones from the Beats family include the "Beats Solo HD," a high-definition on-ear headphone, which is available in red, black, or white. The "Red" version is made specifically for Irish musician Bono'sProduct RED charity group. Beats by Dre has also teamed with David Guetta for "Mixr" - a model targetted for DJs. There is also the "Pro" model, an over-the-ear DJ headphone which is available in either black or white. The "Pro" is targeted towards the professional DJ market. The "Wireless" are on-ear headphones with wireless technology which needs to be recharged and uses Bluetooth technology. The "Beatbox" is a compact speaker with both an iPod dock and 3.5mm stereo jack The original "Studio" headphones released in 2008, which are an over-the-ear type headphone that incorporate a high-power digital amplifier and powered noise-cancelling requiring the use of 2 AAA batteries to operate. In 2011, Beats by Dre released limited edition of Beats Studio with 6 colors, such as magenta, orange, purple, silver, blue, and green. The upcoming "Beats Executive" is the second headphone from Beats to feature noise-cancellation. It also has an auto-off feature, a brushed-aluminum finish and leather headband.

But like all these things, other companies have jumped on the band wagon, and for a much cheaper price you can get funky headphones from many stores like Topman, Jack Wills, HMV, Selfridges, Mark and Spencer, in fact almost anywhere.

I wear large headphones when I dj but not for any other use, partly because they scuff my caps, also they might clash with what I'm wearing unless I bought dozens of different coloured ones, but mainly because I think they look a bit silly. Maybe it's because I've already lived through the large headphone trend before and instead of it feeling young and trendy it feels a bit "Been there, done that."I prefer my small subtle headphones that fit nicely in my ears.

Saying that, for dj-ing I could do with something with a bit more style. So which ones would you Choose?

  1. I completely agree, when I first saw some guys with big earphones on the bus I thought, WTH! Ah trends!
My favourites are the blue ones in the right low corner. :D
But I think you like the golden ones.

  2. I'm kind of partial to the neon green ones in the upper right. Now I'm not a huge fan of neon green, but for some reason those are calling to me. Can you hear them?

  4. Ale, yep they are really back in now. :D And you are correct my favourites are the gold and black to go with my bling!

Mad Mind, well you have expensive taste because they are the Dr Dre headphones! They are a great style.

Dazee, they look a bit like a Swatch watch I think! Good choice too!

  5. Well, heck...I want one of each so I can match my outfit like I do with my glasses frames and purse shells! Seriously, I'm torn between the streamlined look of those in the bottom right and the multicolored ones on the bottom left. Wonder what the difference in sound quality is?

You'll laugh, but I still have the same set of huge headphones I got probably 35 or 40 years ago! Not sure they'll still fit the plug on any of the electronics I currently have, though. (and yes, I still have a turntable even if I seldom use it...vinyl rocks!)

  6. Would you believe I rarely ever use headphones? It's been years! I'm allergic to dust mites n sometimes I react to them on the phones... must keep washing them with alcohol. I have a large set in black filed away somewhere- can't remember!
    I definatly prefer aired tunes-
